Reader’s Question:

I would like to know if my non owners SR22 car insurance will cover me for the uninsured car? Is it enough car insurance for uninsured car?

Sam

Chicago IL

I suggest that you check that any automobile you operate has insurance on it or not. Do not rely upon SR-22 car insurance to supply the required car insurance coverage. The car owner is required to place insurance on it. Your non-owners SR22 car insurance will be second to that insurance coverage. A non-owners SR-22 car insurance usually does not protect coverage for the car (Physical Damage) or other essential coverages like PIP, UM, and/or PD.

In case you borrow an automobile from a friend and get into any sort of accident in that vehicle, your friend’s car insurance would certainly kick in 1st. But when, for instance, if you were found at fault in an accident and the injury to the other driver’s car  exceeded the liability limits in your friend’s insurance plan, your nonowners SR22 car insurance coverage would cover the excess (up to policy limits).

If the car’s insurance policy got canceled or terminated or lapsed or was not in effect, the non-owners SR22 car insurance policy would cover the policy holder in case of an accident. Remember though, a non-owners policy covers liability only, not the car.

Reader’s Question:

My husband had a car accident last week and unfortunately, he had a little drink before he drove home. How does SR22 insurance work here in California and what coverage should we get?

Jade

Bellflower, CA

Whenever you had an accident the usual thing you do to prove your financial responsibility is to provide a proof certificate from a California Insurance that should be authorized to do business in California. In order to get a California Insurance proof certificate you can call your insurance broker or agent but you should not hand in a copy of your policy for it could not replace the California Insurance proof certificate. Only the SR22 insurance document that was issued by the Insurance Company can guarantee to the Department of Motor Vehicles in California that you have gotten hold of the states requirement of minimum liability coverage. And this can also remove your driver’s license under suspension.

An SR22 Motor Vehicle Liability may only cover one vehicle registered under your name or to those vehicles you do not own or the broadest coverage in which it covers all the vehicles you own or not. Once you have the state’s minimum liability requirement, your insurance will inform the Department of Motor Vehicles about your insurance coverage. The best thing you could do is to get a Minimum Liability Coverage for all your vehicles registered under your name for your own use or operational use. If you don’t own a Motor Vehicle Liability Coverage you have to acquire a non-owner’s liability coverage. And the minimum of SR22 insurance is for three years and can be extended based on how severe your situation is.

Car Insurance Claims Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I’m Alfred from Nevada. Just a question: What are the basic things that I should do at the scene of an accident for car insurance purposes?

Alfred

Henderson, NV

Well Alfred, I suggest you take all the necessary precautions to avoid getting into an accident. But in the unfortunate event that you do, make sure that you still keep a clear mind and remember to do these simple things.

Don’t panic, and make sure that everyone around you is alright. Check your companions, if you have any, and see if you are all there. Then check the other party and see if they had any casualties. Call an ambulance or the paramedics if there was someone who severely injured. Don’t attempt to move anyone on your own because it only might do more harm than good.

Now when you call for the ambulance, don’t forget to call the police station, as well. In most cases, a police officer is needed at the scene of the accident. It is also important to avoid any delays and any possible denials on your claim.

You should also remember to exchange information with the other party. Don’t forget to get the other driver’s name, address, telephone number, insurance agent and insurance provider.

Most importantly, you should call and inform your insurance agent there in Nevada about the incident. There isn’t anything special you must do. But the sooner you report it to your insurance agent and insurance provider the better, because it helps speed up the claims process.

Auto Insurance Clifton New Jersey NJ

Reader’s Question:

If I co-sign for an car loan in Clifton, New Jersey and the primary on the loan does not carry auto insurance, will I be responsible in the case of an accident?

Ben

Clifton, NJ

If you co-sign on a loan it is likely that you could be held responsible if there was an accident and the car was not properly insured. As a co-signer you are partly responsible for those who drive the vehicle and what happens while they are driving by what is called vicarious liability.

The financial institution that is the lien holder on the car will usually require collision and comprehensive coverage above the state’s mandatory liability auto insurance. This way their investment is the car is protected. If the insurance lapses on the car they might decide to take out insurance on the car themselves and add the cost, which will be high, to the loan.

Reader’s Question:

Ive had an sr22 auto insurance on file for the past five years but I think I dont need it anymore. I live in California and havent had a ticket or any traffic violation in five years. How will I find out if I still need an sr22 in California?

Jim

Los Angeles, CA

The most effective way to know if you still need an SR22 is to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of California. You may contact the California DMV can be reached at 1 (800) 777-0133.

You may visit your local drivers license office in CA.

I suggest that you contact the DMV because laws and rules are very arbitrary when it comes to an SR22 insurance policy. In most states you can use the internet to verify our license requirements.
