Reader’s Question:

I am required to get and SR22 form here in New Hampshire, What is the exact car insurance coverage do I need here in NH?

James

Manchester NH

The New Hampshire Department of Safety states that an SR22 form is a proof of liability insurance that needs to be submitted by car insurance provider.

This sr22 form is mandated by the New Hampshire DMV for Owner or Non Owner. This Sr22 certificate is valid until it has been canceled through sr-26 form. It is important to keep the Sr22 form active for the the time period you are required to have it, otherwise, your drivers license will be suspended.

The New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles states that an SR22 insurance is required for:

1. three years from the period of accident or from the time imposed by the hearing examiner

2. If convicted of 2nd offense of DWI, five years from the date of the conviction

3. If convicted of a serious offense while being mandated to carry an sr22 form; there’s another 3-year extension to carry an sr22 from the date of the offense

An SR22 form is a proof to the NH DMV that you have the required insurance of the state. You are usually required to carry an sr22 if you dont have liability insurance at the time of the accident. This form has to be files by your car insurance company with the DMV and your insurance company will need to inform the DMV if the sr22 has been canceled, terminated or lapsed.

The minimum liability insurance in the state of New Hampshire is 25/50/25. This means you will need to have at least the coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury liability per injured person up to $50,000 per accident. You will also need to have $25,000 property damage liability per accident.

If you want to get more information regarding on the coverage of SR22 insurance, you may contact New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles.

Reader’s Question:

When and how long do you need sr22 insurance form?

Frank

Boise ID

An sr22 insurance is simply a proof of insurance that the Department of Motor Vehicle will require from an individual who has been caught with these particular violations: driving under the influence (DUI), driving drunk and license has been suspended. When you have committed any of those violations, you need sr22 insurance from your vehicle insurer. Take note that this not a new insurance but just a form certifying that you are carrying at the least minimum liability insurance requirements in a particular state.

For example, if you are in Idaho you need sr22 insurance form that certifies you have a coverage of at least $25,000/$50,000 for bodily injuries and $15,000 for property damage. You need sr22 insurance form to be able to drive again. You must have that form with you at all times, otherwise, your license could be suspended again. How long you need sr22 insurance depends whether it is your first time to be caught. If it is the first time, then, you are required to carry it for three years. Make sure that you do not get convicted of a major offense during that period because it will mean getting another three-year extension for carrying sr22.

Reader’s Question:

A tree limb fell on my windshield and I would like to know if my liability insurance in Boise, Idaho will cover this?

Jane

Boise, ID

No, if a tree limb that damaged your windshield will not be covered under your liability insurance. I suggest that you check with insurance agent if your property damage insurance will cover the damages.

Your property damage liability covers you if your vehicle damages other people’s property. Normally it is their automobile, however it could be a a house or a fence or any other property damaged in an accident. Bodily injury liability may also give for a legal defense if another driver in the accident files a lawsuit against you.

You will need a physical damage of comprehensive coverage on your vehicle so that your windshield will be covered from the tree limb.

If you only have the liability coverage in Boise, Idaho and you do not have the comprehensive coverage on your car your car insurance will not pay for the damage to your windshield. You may be able to obtain car insurance policy quotes on this website for physical damages of collision and comprehensive so that in the future your vehicle will be fully protected by your auto insurance.

Reader’s Question:

If I co-sign for an car loan in Clifton, New Jersey and the primary on the loan does not carry auto insurance, will I be responsible in the case of an accident?

Ben

Clifton, NJ

If you co-sign on a loan it is likely that you could be held responsible if there was an accident and the car was not properly insured. As a co-signer you are partly responsible for those who drive the vehicle and what happens while they are driving by what is called vicarious liability.

The financial institution that is the lien holder on the car will usually require collision and comprehensive coverage above the state’s mandatory liability auto insurance. This way their investment is the car is protected. If the insurance lapses on the car they might decide to take out insurance on the car themselves and add the cost, which will be high, to the loan.

Where To Get An SR22 Form For Auto Insurance

Reader’s Question:

I want to know where I can get an sr22 form and please tell me the process. Thanks.

Leah

Thank you for asking Leah.

The SR22 form is something that the insurance carrier has and will file once you have purchased the car insurance required of you by the state. This form may be given to Policyholders to take to the license office. In some cases, it can be downloaded online or mailed. Some insurance carriers offer instant SR-22s, while other require it to be filed before mailing it to you.

If you are mandated to file an SR-22, then you should contact your liability insurance company and inform them of the needed filing with our state. The sr22 form must be filed by an insurance carrier licensed through your state’s insurance regulatory body normally.

If you are not able to find a carrier that can file the SR22 for you then check with your state’s insurance regulator who should be able to advise you where to find an insurance company in your area that you can obtain the required insurance from and file the SR22 form on your behalf.

Goodluck!
